Not your average quarter!
If you asked "high school Kylie" or even "UW freshman Kylie" if she would take a quarter off of school she would have called you crazy. At those stages in my life I was so focused on the "path" that all students follow: from high school to college to work. I was just going through the motions. This was certainly something different, something more meaningful...

Application for the position of Legal Associate at the ACLU of WA
This fall I applied to a part-time job at the ACLU of Washington. Although I didn't get an interview, it was an invaluable learning experience. I practiced my networking, interviewing, and resume -building skills. Below is my cover letter for my application.
UW Law School Fair
November 3rd, Election Day, was a terrible day to hold a law school fair. Nonetheless, I attended because I didn't want to miss the opportunity. And in some ways, it was nice to have a distraction before results starting coming in.
I wanted to spend this quarter thinking about post-graduation plans and my pre-law development specifically. I started reaching out to folx on Linkedin and doing some basic research into organizations I am interested in like the NAACP Legal Defense Fund or people like Ben Crump. My biggest pre-law development; however, was certainly the fair. Attending the fair forced me to do some real research into schools. I read about programs, classes, opportunities abroad and more! It reminded me of college applications, but I was coming to it with a lot more knowledge.
Although I am still not certain that I'd like to attend law school, this was a first step.

Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships & Awards
As I reflected in December 9th's Portfolio Prompt (see drop down), it has been very difficult for me to move forward during this time. I didn't have the hopes and desires I once did. I really lost touch of myself and what it means to be "living". A conversation with my CP colleague and friend, Simon, helped me take the first step forward.
When I applied to study abroad at Edinburgh roughly a year ago, I was a very different person. I saw me study abroad as a time for fun. I was going to Europe, eager to see my friends who live in Scotland and to travel. Of course, I saw the value of learning at an incredible university, but I was doing what every white, American college student does. But that's what I wanted to be.
Obviously, my exchange was canceled and although unfortunate I planned to use it as an opportunity to push myself more. Simon told me about the Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships & Awards's listerv and I immediately signed up. Lucky enough, an introduction meeting was happening that next week. For the first time in a long time I was excited about something. In addition, I was thankful to to finally be thinking at the future as something full of opportunities rather than fear.
