The Washington Center ApplicationOver break I submitted my application for The Washington Center. I worked on my application materials with our campus TWC liason, Meera Roy. Ms. Roy also happens to be a advisor for my major, Political Science. Not only did I work on my skills as a writer, but I made great improvements to my resume. Below are my application materials.
12-19 Update: I was accepted!
1-27 Update: I received scholarships!
School of the New York TimesOver winter break I spent a lot of time thinking about what I wanted to do this summer. During this search I discovered The New York Times' Nick Kristof's Win-A-Trip. I've been reading Kristof since I was in high school. Traveling to report on human rights became an instant dream. I thought about how I could get there and obviously journalism experience. would give me a leg up. Of course, I had none. Then I found The School of the New York Times and immediately applied. The application required a variety of components. Below is my short answer response. I was accepted this quarter for the Gap Summer Program.
Big Double aka MoominValley! This quarter, one of the things I was looking most forward to was my rooming situation. I roomed with my best friend, Bri in the biggest double in our sorority house (colloquially known as "Big Double". Our room was Moomin themed. Moomin is a Scandinavian character who is somewhat equivalent to our Winnie the Poo. I discovered Moomin during my study abroad in Sweden. I went to a Moomin store in Finland and London. I brought home a Moomin plush and it became Bri and I's "thing".

HONORS 221: Evolution and Human Behavior I learned a lot in HONORS 221. As a Political Science major I don't get too much science in my coursework. This course has made me think about humans differently. In addition I really appreciated learning how to read scientific studies as a social science student. I can take this skill with me for the rest of my life. I am so thankful I had the opportunity to take this course because it has helped me rediscover my interest in science! Dr. Herron's passion was also made enjoy taking this course. Please see my papers below + my Group Research Project Report
Paper 1 questions if there is an advantage to being left handed versus right handed
In Paper 2 I looked at a study seeking to understand how children judge facial hair in relation to both dominance traits and mate choice traits
Paper 3 is about Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy (NVP) or, as it is commonly known, "morning sickness"
I enjoyed writing Paper 4 in particular because it looks at the way we elect our officials. It has been shown that we prefer both men and women with lower-pitched voices, but this study looks to see if these leaders are any more effective than others
Our Group Research Project we hypothesized that that humans cry as a mechanism to elicit attention and care from others. Through an anonymous survey sent out to UW students we tested this hypothesis

POL S 361: United States Courts and Civil LibertyWhen I registered for this course I was super excited. I have always been fascinated by the Supreme Court and how it has influenced American history. As a human rights minor, this course couldn't have been better. All of my preparation for midterms I do by hand to help with memory so I do not have them linked here, but I organized my notes in the form of case briefs. Below are the two case briefs I turned in as assignments for class. By the end of the quarter I had one of these for each case. I learned two un-course related lessons this quarter. One, wait to donate textbooks for a little longer. I used the book for this course during my summer at Harvard in 2017 and donated it this past summer. Second, you can get too confident. I was extremely confident for our first midterm because I prepped well, but I went too fast and missed a whole short answer.
Brandenburg v. Ohio is a free speech case. The Court's decision established two-pronged test for First Amendment: speech can be restricted if it causes imminent lawless action or is likely to.
NYT v. Sullivan is a freedom of the press case. In order public officials to prove libel, they must show “actual malice”. According to the Court, actual malice is knowledge that it was false or with reckless disregard of whether it was false or not
Our final assignment had us write an opinion as if we were a Supreme Court Justice. We were asked to rule on campaign finance. In our paper we can to decide to uphold or overturn Citizens United. If we did the later we had to create a new standard for campaign finance to go by.
