An Experience
This quarter one of my memorable experiences was celebrating my birthday. It was strange having my first birthday in college. Usually I wake up and my mom has already decorated my room and there's breakfast being made. This year I woke up in the porch with a different family. Luckily, I am from the area and was able to spend part of it with my mom. Thursdays this quarter are my easy days because I only have one class from 11:30 AM to 12:50 PM. After class, I spent time with my friends back at the house. For dinner, I went with my mom at our favorite restaurant- FLO in Bellevue. People always ask me if I like having my birthday on Valentine's Day and honestly it isn't too bad when you have family and friends to share it with. My mom brought me a card and chocolate covered strawberries. It was strange to think this is one of the few times my mom has seen me since I've been at UW. It was really nice to catch up with her and celebrate this milestone.

A Conversation
I had an impactful conversation with the mom of my best friend in high school. His mom reached out to me on my birthday and asked to get lunch. A large part of my high school experience was spent at my best friend's house and I realized how much I missed his family. Since arriving at UW I've been consumed by college life. It was nice to step back and remember that this hasn't been my entire life and won't be my entire life. Over lunch we caught up, reminisced, and discussed the future. This conversation reminded me to leave my bubble once and awhile.

A letter to past Kylie at the beginning of Winter Quarter 2019
The snow days really saved you. You are really lucky that this gave you the opportunity to get a grasp on this quarter. This won't always be the case. Keep up on your assignments especially readings. There were a few close calls on getting work done. After Environmental Studies 100, review what you learned in lecture. This way you won't have to cram for exams. Be open to classes and new experiences you didn't expect to try. Balance is key. Do not get off track!
A letter to future Kylie at the end of Spring Quarter 2019
Spring Quarter can be a lot of fun- the sun is out and freshman year is coming to an end -but I am hoping you didn't lose yourself in all the craziness. You're taking two NW classes and I am hoping you found these interesting despite your typical discomfort with this learning area. I want you to remember how stressed you were for your singular final last quarter. I hope you didn't do this to yourself again because I doubt you only have one. Most of all, you did it. Freshman year is over and you survived. There have been ups and downs, but I hope learned a lot about yourself.

I am honored and thrilled to be traveling to Sweden this summer with the UW Honors Program. After my month in Sweden I will be traveling to London to visit two of my friends. I met Salwa and Harry at Harvard during a pre-college program before my senior year of high school. The photo below is from us together July 23, 2017.
