Ever since I was little I’ve been passionate about the concept and protection of rights. In eighth grade, my mom took me to the east coast because I would not stop talking about the Revolutionary War. Our first stop was Washington D.C. and at the United States Capitol building I purchased a copy of the Bill of Rights. Upon return, I hung it in my room. Knowing that I had these rights empowered me. I hope to spend my life learning about and working for rights in practice, not just on paper. Over the course of my education I’ve explored different kinds of rights and am currently primarily interested in voting rights.
Today, I have the privilege of seeing and working on voting rights in action through my internship. This quarter I started as a Fieldwork Associate with Common Purpose. Common Purpose is a nongovernmental organization founded by David Domke, a University of Washington Communications Professor. Common Purpose works to make democracy more just and inclusive. Through education, voter registration, and voter mobilization, Common Purpose drives civic action. I am so grateful for this opportunity.
